Who Is Gilad Shalit?

Gilad Shalit is an Israeli soldier who was kidnapped by Hamas militants on June 25th 2006. He was held in an unknown location in the Gaza strip for over 5 years, with nobody having any knowledge about his current state. The Hamas militants held him in captivation and isolation for 1941 days, until his release on October 18th 2011, as part of a prisoner exchange. This exchange being Gilad Shalit, for 1027 Arab prisoners, most of them terrorists. Now, of course, all the Israeli citizens wanted Gilad freed, but they obviously didn't want the person responsible for their child's death to be released back into the world to kill more people. Me, I think that yes, the deal is CRAZY, and completely unfair, but i still think Israel did the right thing when they agreed to the prisoner swap. You would think I'm crazy, but that is why i made this blog. I want to share my opinions about why I think the Shalit deal was worth it for Israel(I'm not saying it's good/fair), and would like to hear different opinions from different people.

Some Reasons Behind My Opinion

I think Gilad Shalit should have been released. You probably think I'm crazy, and so is the Israeli government, but believe it or not, there are reasons for doing so. Many, actually.
1. It is the Israeli Army's duty to protect and defend their soldiers at any cost, well maybe not any  cost. If they wouldn't have released Gilad, people would be scared of going to the army, or sending their kids to the army. They would not trust the army with the lives of their children, and would prefer to immigrate to a different country to prevent their kids from ever having to be in the Israeli army.
2. There are many Arab terrorists and prisoners, thousands being trained, and many more to be imprisoned. 1027 prisoners, will it really make such a big difference? Of course, they fully deserve to be in prison, they were responsible for hundreds of innocent Israeli lives. But, there are thousands and thousands more to come.
3. With all the campaigns around Israel, it would be a lot easier to just release him. For five years there was chaos around the country, and it would be helpful to just get it over with.

Yes, there are more reasons, which I will post later on my blog.

  1. If it is the Israeli Army's duty to protect their soldiers at any cost, why didn't they release Ron Arad?

  2. That is exactly what I was wondering, personally, I could come up with a few reasons. I think that:
    1. there is a different prime minister, maybe the one in 1985 would not have released him
    2. the society is different. Gilad Shalit is famous in Israel, there are millions of campaigns and organisations for his release-this might have influenced the government.this includes Gilad's parents, who set up a tent outside the prime ministers residence.
    3. maybe the fact that he is younger, and that his parents are treating him like a child, while Ron Arad is more of an adult, people feel more guilty about not releasing Gilad.

there is probably a better reason, but i doubt we will ever know for sure. different people have different opinions, what do you think?

  3. Congratulations on figuring out how to put a visitor map on your blog. I had not heard of Gilad Shalit so I found this topic very interesting. What would be helpful to me as a reader would be for you to include under your title a very brief description of who Gilad Shalit is and the issue. That way a reader doesn't have to go through the entire blog to find out. Add a search gadget as well so people can search your blog.
